Josh Pyke La Dispute Nirvana Four Year Strong blink-182 The Getaway Plan
At least listen to 3 of these bands a day :D
I have bands I will always love and bands that I listen to in come and go phases, so pretty much both of those you mentioned.
I’m a crazy Nirvana fan, always have been and always will be.
A couple of other bands/artists I’ll always love are: Four Year Strong, Set Your Goals and Josh Pyke.
Unique question. (:
Well, I’d have to say it’s my iPod.
I listen to a lot of music that’s not always necessarily the same genre to what I’m ‘aiming’ (for lack of a better word) for. Such as Pop-Punk and Hardcore. However, I have to say I do listen more (when I’m writing) to Josh Pyke, City And Colour, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Right Away Great Captain! and William Fitzsimmons. I suppose, it makes what I do a little bit different.
This hasn’t always been the case though, I’ve changed/adapted my writing style since my first release (the songs are all on Myspace). I consider those songs “the past”, my sound has changed for the better.
Thanks for asking me something, you’re actually the first.
Bye.
PLEASE, KEEP IN MIND I WROTE THIS REVIEW LAST YEAR AND IT WAS RUSHED. Really sorry about it’s shitness, ahaha. I tended to drift off into other aspects and things. I promise when I write another review and take my time, they’ll be heaps better than this.
Band: Four Year Strong
Genre: Pop-Punk/Hardcore
Album: Rise or Die Trying
Rating: 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5
Although still rare (but very sort after by fans of Hardcore searching for a new band of similarities), Pop-Punk and Hardcore are verging together to create bands such as Set Your Goals, No Trigger, and the loved by many, hated by just as much, Four Year Strong. The Breakdowns, exaggerated double-bass pedals, fast and technical bassy riffs and the almighty rebellion of the Hardcore nation are, now spawning from a different musical angle and further reaching out to those with ears to listen and interpret. Four Year Strong’s (commonly abbreviated as FYS) debut studio album ‘Rise or Die Trying’ has all that, plus the added bonus of versatility, by means of their acoustic shows. In these Dan and Alan, the bands vocalists and guitarists, play all their hits from every album and demo in which the audience can hear the songs on the mellow sound of an acoustic guitar. They do these shows on the side of their full-band major tours. ‘Rise or Die Trying’ commences with an intro song called ‘The Takeover’, which starts off with Church bells, then a war siren, after which screeching of both the distorted guitars that over-tone one another. Then a sort of ‘George of the Jungle’ drum beat comes in on the drums using the toms, almost immediately after, both guitars pluck and strum their riff. This is shortly followed by the all awaited vocal chant “START THE TAKEOVER! This is your last warning, OUR TIME HAS COME!, we’re going straight on till morning, just turn up our soundtrack and we’ll keep singing, OUT LOUD! We’re going straight on till morning, START THE TAKEOVER!”. It is in a way expected and a great way to set standards for what the listener will hear for the rest of the album. You may find it funny that at live shows, these lyrics are followed by “HOW THE %@!$ IS EVERYBODY!?”. Then if you then look at the last song of the album, ‘Maniac (R.O.D)’ you would hear an ending with just as much anticipation, these words screamed and shouted by the whole band “RISE! OR! DIE! HERE AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD!”. I would suspect this is why the album name was decided upon. Four Year Strong have devised the perfect way to their listeners laughing and having a great time while dancing in their bedroom with the stereo up loud all-night-long. “How is that?” you say? Well, the answer is they have included relationship humour, sarcasm and just plain weird stuff into their song lyrics. Yes, you wouldn’t be wrong if you said other bands have done this too (such as Blink-182), but they have chosen to do so in a more obvious and articulate way. For instance, the song ‘Catastrophe’, they sing, “I’ve been making a list of all your so called ‘big plans’, and I’m really having trouble, ‘cause it’s longer than the stretch of my attention span. Wait what were we talking about again”. Now for an example of them being just plain weird, in their song ‘Wrecked ‘Em? Damn Near Killed ‘Em’ they sing, “So come on, CHECK! CHECK! Can you hear me now” which surprisingly is the song’s pre-chorus. Also they sometimes use lyrics that you expect to hear in the next big gangster rap (or hip-hop) hit. Lyrics such as “Roll with the punches” and “We’re just burning up and hitting up the scene that was ours to hit up” fall into that category. Another thing you might pick up on when listening to this album is that 75% of the songs are about girls and fighting for fun. The album’s cover can be viewed as abstract or meaningful. It is a detailed cartoon depiction with a space background. The Moon is visible in the bottom left and Earth is visible in the top left and stars are all around. It has two wizards with white beards in purple gowns who are riding a giant squid. A pack of robotic space sharks with red eyes venturing straight towards the giant squid as well as the wizards upon it. It appears the giant squid is fending them off with its beak and tentacles. In the middle of all this, is the iconic Four Year Strong logo, and underneath that is the album name in a fancy, curly font. The song names are just as abstract in themselves; they named songs after famous movie quotes, such as: ‘Wrecked ‘Em? Damn Near Killed ‘Em’ which is a quote from ‘Black Sheep’ and also ‘Men in Black II’, ‘Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die’ is a reference to a memorable line in the movie ‘The Sandlot’, ‘If He’s Here, Who’s Running Hell?’ is a quote from the movie ‘Van Wilder’, ‘Abandon Ship Or Abandon All Hope’ is a quote from Pirates Of the Caribbean 2, and the bonus track ‘Not to Toot My Own Horn But, Beep Beep’ is a quote from Scrubs in the episode ‘My Drive-By’ when Dr. Cox tells the hospital that he, not Turk, saved a man’s life. The only song that was named according to lyrics was the song ‘Catastrophe’. Something else that would be considered funny in a different way is that the band includes a keyboardist who plays a keyboard that’s roughly 15x5 inches that looks like it was just bought from a $2 toy-shop; it even has the colours to match. Overall, I have mixed views about this album; there are many things that are laughable, and things that sound nothing less than amazing. With that being said, the lyrics are well written, catchy and have a meaning in between the lines.
To go back to the original plans for this blog.
This blogs original contention was to be a way for people who like my music to interact with me and read my reviews of other people’s music.
Hope everyone’s okay with it,
